Well, this weekend a milestone was reached at our house. Troy got his first cell phone. I swear, potty training wasn't this big a deal! I have watched, fascinated, as this child, who has NEVER talked on the phone before Saturday, spent HOURS texting and calling all of his friends! Although clearly relishing every unlimited minute, by Saturday evening he was rolling his eyes and sighing at every ring. "This stupid phone," he'd moan.
Before my eyes the same little boy who last week was happily playing Legos is now texting his "girlfriend". The beaded turtle and train on his nightstand have been replaced with chargers and a Maxim he "borrowed" from Dr. Baby. The dish that once held souvenir coins from other countries now holds a beer cap collection (at least he didn't drink them..yet!). This is a child whose greatest pleasure was luring unsuspecting persons into the bathroom while he was showering to show them "baloney": his ass smushed up against the glass shower door! He won't let me in there while he's brushing his teeth, now.
All of the other changes were subtle and gradual and really, I was tiring of the "baloney" anyway. But, this PHONE! It's crazy how in ONE day, he's a different person. A boy who's stressed by the constant flow of communication. A boy who changed his voicemail message 17 times til it was "just right". A kid that's speaking and texting in hip, abbreviated lingo...OMG!
